Horsemouth

Natty Dread Taking Over is off Culture’s landmark album “Two Seven Clash”. Lead singer Joseph Hill and his cousins Albert Walker and Kenneth Lloyd Dayes harmonize beautifully overtop of one of Jamaica’s most famous backing bands–”The Revolutionaries”–who not only featured now legendary drum and bass duo Sly & Robbie but also received occasional contributions from a guy named Leroy “Horsemouth” Wallace.
I dedicate this song to the crazy woman in the park who feeds the squirrels.

though i’ve only been to a very tourist part of jamaica i can still smell the islands sweetness when i hear music like this. you cannot manufacture a song like this without losing much of its playfullness and classy, brassy sorrow.
i wish i could get you a recording of the cover of sam cooke’s ‘cupid’ i heard when i was there. it was being sung by a blind old man, playing on an old beat up guitar, his mic resting on a wooden box of red stripe. the melody he was singing sounded familiar, but i couldn’t place it; i thought it was the most beautiful music i’d ever heard (i fall in love easily though). it was several months later that i learned which song he was singing. i have video of him singing it, if anyone knows how i could transfer only the audio…
on a seperate note, it would be good if you could listen to the music while writing your response — i had to open a new window to do so. i guess i just answered my own question.

Thanks for your response Tony. Cupid is a very difficult song to sing, and I’m sure would make an amazing cover for a old Jamaican man to sing–I would love to see the video of that.
You can play any of the tracks on the blog in a seperate ‘pop-up’ window by pressing the orange words ‘pop-up’ located underneath and to the right of the play button. This way you can leave the page entirely and the song will continue playing.
