Almost Thankful

How about that?  It didn’t take long for the celebs to find SONGSTORY!  Ricky Williams, and that Fat french guy, what’s his name?? they’re two of my absolute favourites!  Check out the comments section under the Kalimba Solo! posting to see what these ‘A’ listers have to say about Earth, Wind & Fire.

We recently featured some production work by Oh No.  But that lady, Mrs. Rabnett, seemed somewhat dismissive of his older brother producer/emcee Madlib.  What’s that about?  Maybe she thinks Madlib is played out?  Everyone knows about Madlib, so you can’t like Madlib anymore?  Is that what you’re thinking you old bag?  Sorry.  I get defensive when I feel Madlib has been slighted.

Today’s featured song is a piece of Madlib production that I absolutely love.  It’s off Declaime’s 2001 album ”Andsoitissaid”, an album which was produced in its entirety by Madlib.  On “Andsoitissaid” this track is titled Thankful, but this is just the instrumental version.  I can listen to this shit on repeat and never get tired of it.  It really puts me in a very specific mood–a very relaxed mood.  It’s the musical equivalent of mood lighting and incense.

Here’s a picture of Madlib taking a swing at one of his fans.

Grease-Monster, I think you should give the whole story behind this photo. Do remember what ben said? That was the most awkward I think I have seen anybody who is that cool. Is Madlib played out? Let’s just put it this way, if madlib ended up dieing in the near future, I would probably stop listening to hip-hop all together ( I have recently cut-back 50 percent of hip-hop listening due to the death of jaydee).

p.s. I haven’t been able to listen to any of the last three or four tracks because I don’t have internet at home yet, just at the office and I can’t have a listening session here. So, most of my comments have come from the sheer memory of a song.

Hey Gary the Ghost of Latter Day Saints (aka Story Delegator),

So 100% of you interest in hip hop is derived from Dilla and Madlib? That can’t be right. What about Lexx Leathal, isn’t he one of your favourites?

Yes I remember what Ben said. For anyone who may read this and does not know, Ben is the guy in the red shirt with Madlib. If you look closely at the picture you’ll see a red baseball helmet in the bottom right corner–Ben uses that as a bicycle helmet. A bunch of us were at a Madlib appearence at the Dundas & Yonge HMW and as Ben was waiting in line for an autograph he realized he didn’t have anything for Madlib to sign, so he improvised as follows:

“Hey Madlib, my sons two favourite things in the world are baseball and Madlib, would you mind signing his helmet?”

Madlib looked really confused, and he awkwardly signed the helmet (I think he wrote something funny and cheesy like “Swing for the fences, stay in school”). But then he kinda got into it, as you can see from his enthusiastic fake baseball swing in the picture.

i can’t believe ben wore a fuckin batters helmet all summer as his bike helmet. craziness. i think greasy said it best last night when he said, ben’s style is bordering on really fucking funky shit and just flat out retarded. for the record, i think ben-jammin has the illest style around. peace to my windsor homie. and peace to that kid out in korea. it’s nice to hear your input on this shit.

yeah, this beat is really nice. With Madlib I find that I either immediately love it or the opposite. In this case my feelings are definitely the former. Just wanted to show my support for such an excellent choice. Anybody know that Quasimoto song “Basic Instinct”? (in no way does it relate to the fantastic film with which it shares its title). I’m no Madlib expert, although I am a mid to late 90s hip hop expert, but that song is tops, or aces. Madlib’s on a different level creatively.
