It has now been 4 days since we started Sample Week, when in earnest I posted a Stereolab song and you all were supposed to tell me who sampled it. Lets take a look at some of the guesses we’ve had so far. Andrew Bryce said that Puff Daddy used it in a Lil’ Kim song. Hellz if I know. Maybe he did. I forgot to consider the large gaps in my hip hop knowledge base when I began this simple sample game, and I got exposed on the first response. Andrew Bryce, you’re an asshole. Then came Andrew number 2, Andrew Chang. Andrew Chang didn’t really need to sign his name on his post since we all know Andrew Chang language when we see it. Andrew Chang didn’t guess anything. Rather he spoke in a freely associative way similar to Kramer, and gave us a small lesson on e-friendly grammer. Andrew Chang, you as well are an asshole. Then came me, admitting my weaknesses, putting it all on the line. We all know I’m an asshole. And then FINALLY we hear from Tony. He guessed Sir John A. McDonald. Hilarious! But wrong. Only assholes guess wrong. Didn’t Sir John A tell you?
I declare Sample Week a failure.
Let us segue quietly on to other things and never mention it again.
Today’s song is off Busta Rhymes’ 2000 album “Anarchy”. Appropriately Busta, who can be seen below asking his hands why oh why they insist on tearing holes in all of his best shirts, put exclamation marks in the name of almost every track on the album. This song is an exception–it’s called Show Me What You Got. Listen to how many times he rhymes ORE. Luckily for Busta everything rhymes with exclamation marks!! This track was produced by James Yancy, Jay Dee, Dilla Dawg, J Dilla. It’s never enough.

Greisman! Similar to yourself, I have never listened to a Lil Kim album, something I hope never changes. My “guess” was a joke. Clearly a bad joke. Clearly no one knows who sampled that Stereolab song. My best guess, based on the focus of Songstory, is J Dilla. But I don’t know. I wanna know though, tell me! Who sampled it? I actually liked that Stereolab song quite a bit. Now I’ll listen to this Busta track.

Now I feel stupid. Perhaps I should’ve made the connection before actually listening to the song: the very song I was commenting on was indeed the song that Dilla used the Stereolab sample for! Oh my. Crazy, and on top of that, makes you realize how much music Dilla and all the crate diggin’ producers muct listen to (pete rock, premier, etc). I mean, who the fuck listens to Stereolab other than thin Londonites who drink coffee, smoke cigarettes and frequent lounges and cafes? Apparently James Yancey.

Yo, whats up Songstoriers? I was in Burrito Boys the other week and ran into Davey G, as I affectionately refer to him from our days playing shinny at Hodgson together, and Brycefacekillah (I call him that cause we used to freestyle to the DITC “Thick” instrumental at Zack Cooper’s house in the Annex). We got to talkin while we were waiting for our Burritos and Davey told me to check out this site. I CANNOT BELIEVE that this Busta Bus track is on here. Frequently, as of late, Coach plays this song in the dressing room and stares at me. Maybe he wants me to show him something I’ve got?? I can’t put it together. Oh well, I’ve gotta get ready for the game tonight against the Habs and figure out a way to beat that guy Huet and pot my 2nd goal of the season. Other guys in the room like Nikky Nine Doors Antropov and the Ginuwine Poni prefer the newer Jiggaman song of the same title, you know, “show me what you got little mama, show me what you got pretty lady…” I don’t know though, I like that underground shit, my favourite group is Lords of the Underground, or LOTUG as I like to call them. I’m sorry your sample week failed miserably. That’s too bad. I’ve never heard this song. I know the beat though for sure. I know it from the first unoffical JayLib track. This was the beat that brought Madlib and Dilla together. Madlib flipped over this beat and decided to record a stonesthrow style “the message” (don’t push me cause I’m close to the edge…) without even asking J to use it. He heard Madlib’s recording of it and told him that instead of stealing his shit why don’t they just work together on something and that’s how Jaylib was born. I like the madlib version better for sure. I love Busta on dilla tracks, but the chorus in this song sucks. Busta sounds constipated and is singing off key. Oh yeah, the stereolab song is also incredible. They are a great group. Bryce made an interesting point that producers listen to a surprisingly wide range of music.
